Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Pain Specialist Houston

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disorder characterized by extreme fatigue or tiredness that doesn’t go away with rest and can’t be explained by an underlying medical condition. (Chronic Pain Specialist Houston)

CFS can also be referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID)

The fatigue worsens with physical or mental activity but doesn’t improve with rest.

Other characteristic symptoms include:

  • Sleep that isn’t refreshing
  • Difficulties with memory, focus, and concentration
  • Dizziness that worsens with moving from lying down or sitting to standing

The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown, but there are many theories, from viral infections to psychological stress. Some experts believe that CFS may be caused by a combination of factors.

There is no single test that confirms the diagnosis of CFS. Various medical tests may be needed to rule out other health problems with similar symptoms. Treatment of CFS focuses on improving symptoms.

Our doctors Dr.Shabrez Tariq & Dr.Sara Goel can help you out by providing the best plan for your illness.

Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

  • Fatigue
  • Problems with memory or concentration
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or armpits
  • Unexplained muscle or joint pain
  • Dizziness that worsens with moving from lying down or sitting to standing
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Extreme exhaustion after physical or mental exercise

Causes

The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is still unknown. Some people may be born with a predisposition to the disorder, which is then triggered by a combination of factors. Potential triggers include:

  • Viral infection- Some people develop CFS after a viral infection, so researchers question whether some viruses can cause disability. Suspected viruses include Epstein-Barr virus and human herpesvirus 6. No definitive links have been found yet.
  • Immune System Problems- Although the immune system of people with CFS appears to be slightly compromised, it is not clear whether this damage is sufficient to cause disability.
  • Hormonal imbalances- People with CFS may also have abnormal blood levels of hormones produced by the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal glands. However, the significance of these abnormalities is still unclear.
  • Physical or emotional trauma- Some people report experiencing an injury, surgery, or significant emotional stress just before the onset of symptoms.

Risk factors of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Factors that may increase your risk of CFS include:

Age. Chronic fatigue syndrome can occur at any age, but it most commonly affects young to middle-aged adults.

Sex. Women are diagnosed with CFS much more often than men, but it may be that women are simply more likely to report their symptoms to a doctor.

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Allergies
  • Stress
  • Environmental factors

Eliminate the symptoms of post-exercise fatigue (PEM)-

PEM occurs when even minimal physical, mental, or emotional activity worsens CFS symptoms.

Worsening of symptoms usually occurs 12 to 48 hours after activity and may last for days or weeks.

Activity management, also called pacing, helps balance rest and activity and prevent PEM flare-ups. You must find your personal limits for mental and physical activity, plan for these activities, and rest to stay within these limits.

Although vigorous aerobic exercise is effective for most chronic conditions, it is important to note that people with CFS cannot tolerate such exercise routines.

Home remedies and lifestyle changes-

Making some lifestyle changes can help reduce symptoms.

Limiting or eliminating caffeine intake can improve sleep quality and reduce insomnia. Nicotine and alcohol should also be limited or avoided.

If your night sleep is disturbed, try to avoid napping during the day.

Create a sleep routine. Make it your goal to go to bed at a certain time every night and wake up at roughly the same time.

Medications-

One drug usually cannot treat all symptoms. Also, symptoms may change over time, so medication may also be needed.

In many cases, CFS can cause or become a symptom of depression. Low-dose antidepressant treatment or referral to a mental health provider may be needed.

If lifestyle changes don’t bring you restful sleep, your doctor may suggest sleep medications. Pain relievers can also help deal with aches and pains in the joints caused by CFS.

Alternative medicine-

Acupuncture, tai chi, yoga, and massage may help relieve the pain associated with CFS. Always talk to your doctor before beginning any alternative or complementary treatments

Possible complications of chronic fatigue syndrome include:

  • Lifestyle restrictions
